Headaches Q & A

What are different types of headaches?

Some headaches occur due to an underlying medical condition, such as a sinus infection, while others are the result of an underlying process in the brain. Headaches that aren’t related to separate medical conditions are called primary headaches. Common examples of primary headaches include:

Tension headaches

These are the most common type of headache. Tension headaches may feel like a tight band around your head and are usually caused by muscle tension in your neck and scalp.

Cluster headaches

Although rare, cluster headaches cause excruciating pain and may occur on a daily basis for as long as six weeks. Pain from a cluster headache usually affects one side of the head or the area behind your eye.

Migraines are the most severe and complex type of headache. Migraines cause throbbing, pounding pain, typically on one side of the head, and are among the top 20 most disabling illnesses in the world.

How are migraines different from headaches?

Migraines are more than just intense headaches. Some migraines cause symptoms that resemble a stroke (hemiplegic migraines) and others occur 15 or more days per month (chronic migraines.)

In addition to throbbing head pain, migraines may cause visual disturbances such as flashing lights, nausea, and vomiting.

Researchers believe migraines may come from changes in brain chemicals and nerve pathways. As a board-certified neurologist and pain management specialist, Dr. Kazi is an expert at treating all types of headaches and migraines.

How do you diagnose and treat headaches?

To determine the cause of your headaches, Dr. Kazi begins by reviewing your medical history and performing a physical exam. He includes a complete neurological evaluation in the exam. He may also take tests, such as a CT or MRI scan of your head.

Then, Dr. Kazi recommends the best treatment for your condition. Depending on the type and severity of your headaches, treatment may include:

Botox injections

In addition to reducing frown lines and wrinkles, Botox injections relieve chronic headaches that occur 15 or more days per month.

Nerve blocks

Nerve blocks involve injecting medication into a nerve or bundle of nerves that transmit pain signals from your head. Depending on your needs, Dr. Kazi may use one or more of the following types of nerve blocks:

  • Supraorbital
  • Sphenopalatine ganglion
  • Greater occipital
  • Lesser occipital

These nerve blocks are named after the specific areas they target.

Peripheral nerve stimulator

A nerve stimulator is a device Dr. Kazi implants inside your body. The device sends electrical stimulation to your peripheral nerves, which reduces pain transmission.
